Course Description and Goals:
Students in Writing 233 will learn a number of principles involved in business and in
technical communications. They will analyze specific rhetorical situations to craft messages
that meet the purpose of the communication, the needs of the audience, and the relevant
context. In addition, students will consider the appropriate media through which to
communicate such messages. Working individually and collaboratively, students will
produce both common office documents such as memoranda, letters, proposals, reports and
technical documents such as instructions and fact sheets.

Course Objectives:

  • Introduce students to common rhetorical situations encountered in business and
    technical communications.
  • Offer concrete engagement with a range of written and oral communication genres
    through both real and mock communications situations.
  • Enable students to better control the user interfaces for some common computer
    based tools for communication.
